Hair Health + Volume Styling Tips
Is anyone else feeling lazy these days? Lazy enough to not care if they shower regularly or get ready for their day? I’m not the only one? Perfect!
To help simplify your COVID morning routines even further, I thought I would share with you how I get my hair ready for the day. Just a little secret, it’s not hard at all! No fancy hair primers or oils. No need for expensive wounds or blow dryers. I personally feel like it is all about technique that returns voluminous locks, so here goes nothing!
I start by showering. I only wash my hair 2-3x per week, so I like to do a really deep clean when I “decide” to shower. I use LivingProof shampoo and conditioner most days, but have found that if I switch up my cleaners from time to time, it helps my hair be less high maintenance and more adaptable. No matter what you use, if you do a good, healthy lather of shampoo, as well as use your fingertips to massage your scalp, I have heard that it helps stimulate hair growth. No idea if it is true, but it feels phenomenal and I am not short on thickness, so something must be working.
After rinsing out the shampoo, it is of course time to apply conditioner. I tend to apply my conditioner towards the ends and then massage upwards, but I am always aware to not apply it to my roots. I find this helps my hair to not look weighed down, and it reduces my hair from getting greasy quickly.
Now I usually let my conditioner stay in for a couple of minutes. During this time you can pick your amusement. Facial scrub? Shaving? The list is endless! You decide what you’re feeling in the moment. Once you’ve finished whatever tasks you’ve given yourself, you should be all set to rinse out the conditioner and get ready to hop out of the shower.
When I’ve dried off, I go ahead and wrap my hair in a towel, letting the towel do some of the heavy lifting and hopefully reduce my blow dry time. During this 5-10 minutes, I hydrate the rest of me with moisturizer and/or lotion, and apply my makeup to help pass the time. Once I’m done, I know it is time to tame the beast by brushing out the bottoms first, and then working my way up to my roots. Why the backward stages you might ask? Well, I have found this helps reduce breakage because we all know, every strand counts and I don’t want any damage in the process! (Side note: I didn’t own a hair brush until Spring of 2018. In the past I just used my fingers to comb through my hair and it worked like a charm!)
Now, it is totally your choice if you would like to add some form of heat protection product in your hair. I know everyone is different and by protecting your hair from the heat, it can help reduce the risk of “straw like” hair for some. I personally am all natural most days, so I bypass this step. If you do plan to use a product, similar to conditioner, I would apply it throughout the length of your hair but not near your scalp. It is important those roots are not weighed down!

Now comes the fun part…blow drying! Where the magic happens! When I begin, my focus is always on my roots! Shocker! (Do you see a trend here)? I bend over, so that my face is looking towards the top of my thighs (no thigh gap here). As I begin blow drying, I brush my hair with my fingers straight down, root to tip. I do not use a hair brush because I want the blow dryer to have full control and I don’t like the brush dictating where my hair should go. Next, because my part is on the right side of my head, I flip all of my hair to the opposite direction of my part. Yes, you heard that correctly. What I’m ultimately doing, is forcing the hair to dry in the reverse direction it typically lays. This helps bring more “body” to the roots so they are stronger for longer, and not drying “into place.” From there, I blow dry it towards my part briefly, and then redo all three directions a second time. I end with my head facing my thighs a third time, so that when my hair is completely dry, the front has been dried “forwards.” This incentivizes the front to have a really nice lift and swoop when pushed into position.
That’s it! It’s as easy as that! These top secret discoveries have made all the difference, so give them a try and let me know what you think!
Cheers!
Jen
