Winter Home Styling Guide

When styling your home for winter you want to keep a few important things in mind – think warm, cozy, and inviting!

The holidays are all about bringing friends and family together and hosting all of your favorite holiday traditions. And to do that, don't feel the need to lean into ALL the colorful holiday décor (unless it’s totally your thing). We over here at McFadyen & Co. and Ashley + Louis Design love neutral colors for a timeless holiday season to mix and match pre-existing items with some plush materials that signal the season.

No matter your aesthetic preferences, this year's winter styling is all about bringing the outdoors in, by using organic materials, earthy tones, and natural smells. Simplistic updates will help you transition from one holiday season to the next with minimal effort this winter.

our favorite winter styling items this year

  • Boucle pillows + throws

  • Mini fur rugs (great for layering)

  • Natural wooden décor – bowls, trays, beaded garland, chains, mini trees

  • Muted/natural greenery – pine, juniper, and cedar

  • Knitted poufs + ottomans

  • Natural candles – cedar, rosemary, spruce, lemon cypress

holiday home styling tips

  • Swap out the colorful Christmas tree lights for soft white or none at all

  • Decorate in unexpected places – the kitchen, bathrooms, and entryway

  • Try a basket woven tree collar, instead of a Christmas skirt. Incorporate texture with seagrass, hammered metal, or natural wood collar

  • Nix the Santas and gnomes for natural wooden mini trees or white decor houses

  • Add a winter garland to your fireplace mantel and front door - try an asymmetrical look to switch things up

  • Update your house plants and/or the vessel they are in. Lemon Cypress has the appearance of a mini Christmas tree, but with a citrus scent.

  • Switch out your normal accent pillows for boucle, fur, or a knit option

  • Hang spruce wreaths from the windows or on a mirror with a ribbon

  • Create a homemade garland with dried oranges and yarn to add to your tree or garland

The holiday season is all about creating an experience to be able to open up your home to others and welcome them in. No matter if you're hosting Christmas, New Year, a work party, or more, be sure to have fun expressing your style while decorating for this winter season. It'll be gone before you know it!

Cheers!
