Custom Kitchen Cabinet Build-Out
My custom kitchen cabinet designs are officially in!
If you follow along with me on Instagram (@jen.mcfadyen) you know I worked with a local kitchen cabinet maker this past Tuesday to walk my Tangletown 2-story. With the kitchen demo done, it was a great time to plot my renovation plans with him and be able to narrow down specific measurements for both my uppers and lowers.
Because my kitchen is on the smaller side at 12 x 10, I knew it was important to open up a wall to allow for a larger appearance and more natural lighting to flow through. By doing this, I of course lost a full wall of upper cabinets. However, by redesigning the back wall that was previously blank, and by knocking down the soffits, I now have the extra room to actually increase my cabinetry storage space and allow for a better flow. To say I’m a happy camper is an understatement. Now if only the electrical work could speed up ;)
Anyway, if you know me you know I’m never one to hide the details. I figured I would share my initial outline renderings, as well as some of my inspiration photos to help you see a bit of my vision. And don’t worry, I’ll be sure to include a breakdown of the custom cabinet budget. It’s not always the cheapest, but if you were to compare pricing to a retailer like Menard’s, Lowe’s or Home Depot, you will see that my designer and builder is not all that far off and every inch I’m creating with him is customizable. In my opinion, it’s worth the few extra pennies if you have them…especially in a space where you’re trying to maximize the layout + storage.
Kitchen Inspiration
Every year there is always a fresh new look that starts to make an appearance. Most take time to gain traction or fizzle out. I’m super excited to see my favorite making a splash across a lot of interior designer’s websites.
It’s a fine balance between timeless and inspirational or “on trend,” and I think this design concept has found the perfect happy medium. It’s a twist from a contrasting island, instead allowing for the contrast to live on but in a more organic material such as white oak. I’m beyond excited to to see this application brought to life in my new kitchen, and know that down the road, if I want to paint it to match the rest, I always have the option. (I’m a stickler for frugal backup plans.)
Custom Cabinet Design + Layout
Now for the magic. Once you have your design inspiration, the important part begins.
Functionality in a kitchen is a must! You don’t want your pots and pans on the opposite side of the kitchen away from your range, or the trash not near where you plan to do most of your cooking. Instead, you need to design around your appliances and apply practicality.
On top of that, you’ll want to think through some of your kitchen cabinet must haves such as an appliance garage or spice cabinet. If you missed my post on my top 6 kitchen cabinet must haves, go check them out!
Lastly, you want to be sure you know what size of range, dishwasher, fridge, range hood, etc. you plan to purchase. Every detail and measurement matters. For example - did you know that you want to allow for 2 extra inches of open space above your refrigerator? This is to allow for air flow and ventilation. Be sure to note all of your specific measurements for height, width, and length and you’ll be good to go!

Custom Cabinet Budget
Now for the fun part…the budget. A lot goes into budgeting for any type of renovation. It is important that you understand what is most important for you vs. where you feel you can pull back. I know that I can make adjustments with my finishing materials such as backsplash, lighting, countertops, and hardware. This makes “splurging” on custom cabinets a bit more palatable.
It’s also important to understand your home’s resale value based on your neighborhood and comparables. That’s where a real estate agent like myself can help you out so that you stick to a smart budget when tackling projects.
With all of that being said…here are the goods!
As always, I hope you found that helpful. I would love to hear more about what kitchen design trends you are loving? Do you have any advice for me as I progress through my renovations? And if you’ve had good experiences with kitchen cabinet installs with a retailer in the past. Knowledge is power and the more we share the better off we are.
Enjoy your day!
Jen
